Mayan Hammocks

Bellartson works with specially chosen Artisans to continually incorporate changes in materials and improvements in design which bring a better product to you; woven completely by hand

All Mayan hammocks are made completely by hand without the use of measuring instruments and vary slightly in length and width. Each is a creation of the individual weaver. The skill incorporated in weaving takes years to develope and weavers begin their training in early childhood. Each hammoock is checked for quality upon completion.

Normally hammocks are made of cotton beds (100% cotton) and nylon arms (100% nylon).

Hammocks of 100% nylon bed are available at additional cost.

Nylon hammocks are handwoven with the same quality as the cotton. Only sizes LS, SD, LD, SG, are available in nylon. Although the nylon costs considerably more, we feel the cotton is much more pleasant and comfortable to lie in.

With minimal amount of care a cotton hammock with nylon end strings will last many years.

Optional hanging space is the best distance for general use. However any of the hammocks can be hung in as little as 3 feet and as great a distance as the rope you can find (subject to hanging point of sufficient height).

HISTORY

The Artisans who make the hammocks study and practice from childhood. It is their pastime, their relaxation, their meditation. Their joy comes from working with their hands. Nowhere else on earth are hammocks so finely woven by hand. The skill has been passed down by Mayans for over 1000 years. The technology of the design is incredible. This technology was developed by the Mayans who designed and built the pyramids of Central and South America and who invented the Mayan Calendar. The Mayans are happy people, friendly people, satisfied people; they enjoy their families and friends and their doors are always open and they use the most comfortable and fun furniture ever made.

These hammocks are beautiful in a way which is very unique. They are a link with a great culture which has survived many, many centuries. Through periods of Mayan wars, Spanish conquest and even slavery the Mayans continued to weave and use their hammock as their main piece of furniture. Sometimes 10 hammocks would be hung in one room for a family to sleep and then in the morning all except one or two would be taken down so the space would be available for other uses. The hammock is so light it may be moved easily by a 100 year old person. The Mayans are the happiest people I know of. Bring a little happiness in your life... put a hangout in your life.
